Joyce White

Joyce White has been employed at Dimensions Healthcare Center in Prince Georges County, MD since 1975. She has seen and been through a lot.

The hospital has switched its name a couple of times since she’s been there, and her Union has gone through changes. When she started, she was in Local 63 Fireman and Oilers but a decade later the local affiliated with SEIU, then to merge with 1199E-DC in 2003. Last year, EDC merged with 1199SEIU.

But Joyce White has remained active throughout, serving as Chief Shop Steward, Board Member and Secretary Treasurer over the years. She remains today a member of the members Negotiating Team, a Delegate and a Member Political Organizer.

“With the merger into 1199SEIU, we became a stronger Union, united as one,” she says.  “With all the educational programs that I have attended, I have become more knowlegable in the political arena and more aware of the things that we as a Union can achieve, and how to accomplish our goals.

“I can honestly say that I get an adrenaline rush when we go out and canvass and lobby together. I found out that by canvassing and lobbying, we were able to override the Governor’s veto of Fair Share Healthcare. Politics Works!”
