Valencia Johnson radiologist

Valencia Johnson

Radiologist / Greater Southeast Community Hospital / Washington, D.C.

Valencia Johnson, a radiologist at Baltimore’s Greater Southeast Community Hospital, has been an 1199SEIU member since 2000.  “Becoming an 1199 member has given me the opportunity to improve my skills in the medical field,” Valencia says.  “My Organizer my Delegate spoke to me about my opportunity to return to school while maintaining my position at Greater Southeast.  After reviewing all my options I enrolled in Southeastern University.

“This was really exciting for me and I couldn’t wait to start. My schedule consists of taking classes four days in the evenings Monday through Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m., one class on Saturday as well as one class on Sunday.”

A single mom, Valencia attends classes on the main campus and also at the hospital as she works toward her Associates Degree in Cardiovascular Technology.  “The chance to go back to school, work and take care of my son was going to be a challenge,” she says, “but everyone has encouraged me through this first semester and I am sure they will continue to do so.

“My son, Andre, is 16 and in high school.  He is very proud of me and this makes me feel very good.  We share many moments of doing homework together.  We are both taking a math course in which there are times we will challenge each other to see who gets the answer to their work first. I think this is a great time to have my son see what I am doing and to learn from each other. I believe my returning to school has encouraged my son to stay focused in school and keep good grades.

“I think that any 1199 member who is thinking about returning to school should take the opportunity to speak to their Delegate about enrolling in this program.  Pursuing your education is never too late and it is something that I will always be proud that I took the time to do.  I would like to thank everyone at the union and work for giving me the chance to make a difference in my life.”
