Joyce Dukes
Central Processing Tech / Maryland General Hospital / Baltimore, MD
Joyce Dukes remembers when she first started at Maryland General Hospital in 1969. ”We didn’t have a healthcare cards or prescription plans, and the pay was low ($113.00 bi-weekly) with lots of long days and hours,” says the Central processing Tech.
“When the Union [Local 1199E-DC] first organized us, benefits came into play. Now we were able to fashion new teeth, get glasses, checkups for the family, prescription plans, scholarships, summer camps and more. But this wonderful season ended and another season began as Union members became disinterested. We lost some benefits, summer camps and scholarships.
“I still served on every contract negotiation throughout the years and, as many passed on, I had to step to take on the true duties of a Delegate. The Delegate oath states that I should represent every right and privilege of Union membership as well as to help build our Union.
“I have learned nothing stays the same, everything changes. Last year, we voted for a change in Baltimore and D.C. We voted to merge with 1199SEIU to form United Healthcare Workers East. As a result of the merger, we are a much stronger Union. Since the merger, we have had several bills passed in the Maryland legislature in Annapolis in a short time, addressing the issues of healthcare benefits. When we fight together as a Union and get bills passed so we can all have benefits, that’s what I call getting our fair share!
