Western New York Nurse Council Holds Workshop on A New Breast Cancer Screening Machine

The western New York 1199SEIU Nurse Council held a workshop on June 14, focusing on the GammaGram; a new technology available for breast cancer screening. The GammaGram at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston, NY is tje only one available in the region. GammaGram is 97 percent accurate, with superior clarity and no breast compression.

The GammaGram is a molecular breast imaging technique that goes beyond mammography, MRI, and ultrasound to detect cancer even in women with difficult-to-diagnose breasts. This advanced imaging technology is the next step after a questionable mammogram to provide the earliest detection of breast cancer.

“I’m very excited that our nurse council exhibits the type of leadership to hold workshops on cutting edge technology,” says Jim Scordato, 1199 Vice-President for Kaleida Health. “While this technology is not available at every health care facility, it’s important for our workforce to understand what technologies exist.”
