iSpeak: Civility And Manners

Last week, South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson called President Obama a liar during the President’s address to Congress on healthcare reform. Also, tennis star Serena Williams insulted a line judge over the judge’s call that went against Williams in the U.S. Open. And Kanye West tried to take Taylor Swift’s music video award during the awards ceremony. Below are links to videos of the three incidents.

» Serena Williams At The U.S. Open
» Senator Joe Wilson

Are these episodes representative of a new lack of civility or coarseness in public life or has it always been this way?

Are the three events comparable?

I think it is a lack of civility. People of all ages are rude with their cell phones amd young people have never been taught common courtesy. I know it makes me sound like a grumpy old man, but this is only getting worse--reality TV glamorizes such actions, we lack parenting our kids, etc. We have to realize that this problem comes from many different places and people. But there is always hope. Start with your kids and teach them common sense and manners, then maybe that will spread.

These events show a lack of civility in society. Some in society are very coarse, and we have to train our staff how to deal with difficult people. Some people have a lack of respect for the rules that allow us to function as a society. It is a selfish Me; or a McDonalds “I want it now” attitude of instant gratification. People who feel so course about society need to understand there are rules in place to allow for respect of others. Society needs to be better educated as to how having rules make our lives easier as a group.

In these tough economic times, with banks, and oil companies making all the money, we are all frustrated.

I heard Rep. Joe Wilson. I am in complete disagreement with him. He is very racist. Mr. Obama is trying to help poor people and to reform our health system. For years, white Republicans have opposed healthcare reform. President George Bush and the Republican Party left this country in a big mess--46 million without insurance, millions losing their jobs and homes. I do not like the Reublican Party. I support President Barack Obama.

Serena should know better. She has been fighting for a long time to be treated like a lady but now she is acting like spoiled rotten brat. She needs to apologize to all her fans and people who watch her. Otherwise she will never win another match.
