iSpeak: Boycotting Arizona

With its recent passage of an apartheid-like “passbook law” aimed at immigrants, Arizona has been strongly criticized by—among others—the Phoenix Suns basketball team and the Major League Baseball Players Association. Many sports fans are calling for a boycott of the Arizona Diamondbacks, whose billionaire owner is a big funder of the Arizona Republican Party which supported the anti-immigrant law. Do you think such boycotts are helpful? Would you boycott Diamondback games?

The Diamondbacks’ owner should be ashamed of himself for supporting legislation that promotes racial profiling. It’s disgusting what Arizona lawmakers have resorted to. I would boycott any organization that would victimize families who just want a better future for themselves and their children.

I would not boycott the Diamondbacks baseball club or any other organization. My father came here as an immigrant, learned to speak English and got a job. He paid taxes and supported support his own kids. People come to this country, have their kids here and expect the working class to support them and give them free health care. This needs to be stopped.

Yes, I believe that boycotts are extremely helpful because they hit the person or company right where it hurts--in the wallet. It’s a great idea starting with the Arizona Diamondbacks since their state counts on the revenue from the games to keep the economy and their businesses running. Everyone will be affected from the team owners to the street vendors and it will hopefully make them think twice about the ridiculous law. For decades immigrants have been an essential part of the growth and change to our economy and it’s a shame that when the United States is not doing well the first groups they target are the immigrants. America needs to find another way to deal with its problems that do not involve bigotry, hatred, marginalization and prejudice.

No one should be boycotted except those who commit crimes. Immigrants or naturalized Americans are legal. Anyone illegal, bar none, is committing a crime and there should be consequences. I am not a Republican either. Just a good old 1199 American.

Boycotts are a helpful way for people collectively to raise their voices to say "no" to an immoral law. The power of the purse, unfortunately, is what is listened to.

Boycotts are not helpful when the fires of untruths have been flamed, as is the case here. This Arizona law enforces the federal law that this administration and the previous administration failed to enforce. The USA is a nation of laws. If not, we may as well abandon all laws and call murderers population control artists. If people want to immigrate here, they are welcome to do so legally. That is the only way.

Are you kidding me? This is all about enforcing the law already on the books. Become a tax paying citizen of this country like me and then you can reap the rewards of being a United States citizen. Do it right like my grand parents did. They became citizens, worked hard, paid their way and learned the English language!
