iSpeak on Hate Crimes
This week, a noose was found hanging from the door of an African-American professor at Columbia University Teachers College. This racist hate crime is the latest in a series of similar "noose" incidents across the country over the past year, following the nooses at the high school in Jena, Louisiana. Only last week, a white woman in Queens, NY, was arrested for swinging a noose and threatening to hang a young African American neighbor. How a serious problem do you think this is? What can be done? I believe that racism is still alive and living in the hearts of many, in both the north and the south. I spent years in the civil rights movement back in the 60s and also went to Birmingham and Shreveport, and to this day, the south still scares me. Being white, some people tell me things that I have to point out to them that it's racist. Bigotry exists almost everywhere. Maybe kids should run the world, like Kid Nation, before adults fill their young minds with hate. We need the Al Sharptons to keep it in the spotlight. | It really makes my stomach churn. Education is the only way. I am grateful to learn much about racism from the philosophy of aesthetic realism. It was a horror in the past and it seems history is repeating itself. I used to work at Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged. Being on the picket line in 1995, I believe, had me see that we were more alike than different. I am white. My colleagues and I stayed out on strike for many days. I learned a lot about being just to all people. Later I worked at Beth Israel Medical Center. I am currently living in Missouri, and love getting information from ll99SEIU Beverly Burk Retired RN Bolivar, Missouri
| Racism has always been a problem. The issue never disappeared. It was just under the carpet for a while. You notice it in all the universities that are mainly populated by whites. We just need to face the problems and address it everyday not just one day. Jessie Ortiz Mental health worker Child Center of NY Brooklyn
| It is good to know that the bigots are finally coming out in the open. There has always been an undercurrent of racism in this country towards people of color. Just ask our brothers and sisters in the south. Hopefully our people will stand as one to stamp out this cancer once and for all. Hazel Trotman Lutheran Medical Center Brooklyn
| It is a shame that racism still exists. I thought that we are trying to get along but "lynching" during new age of cyberspace and new age network, should not exist. To the individuals who want to take us back to lynching: wake up! We are trying to be united, so join in and smell prosperity. Patrick Alleyne Dietary Aide Woodcrest Rehab Res HCC Brooklyn |
